POKOTABI / Koraitei
高麗亭
A long-running Shibuya yakiniku institution, Koraitei treats guests to thick-cut tongue, zabuton chuck flap, and tender fillet expertly grilled by the staff and wrapped in lettuce, perilla, and roasted seaweed. Here is what to expect and why advance booking is essential.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Take a seat at Koraitei, set on basement level 1 near Shibuya's Miyamasuzaka, and the table quickly fills with an assortment of Korean side dishes: baechu kimchi, diced radish kkakdugi, seasoned namul, pickled perilla leaves, green chillies, and fragrant roasted rock laver. The restaurant's staff and welcoming matriarch take charge of grilling over the mesh, deftly bundling the sizzling beef into fresh sanchu lettuce with herbs and seaweed before serving it. Having the first wrap offered directly to your mouth is an affectionate house tradition and a hallmark of this venue, which has welcomed guests for more than 50 years.
A meal here typically moves at a brisk, well-judged pace, starting with thick-cut beef tongue before moving on to generous portions of marbled kalbi (zabuton chuck flap), tender fillet, deeply savoury harami skirt steak, and ichibo rump cap. Even richly marbled cuts never feel heavy when bundled into crisp lettuce with pungent perilla, sharp chillies, and savoury roasted seaweed. The wider menu also features horse meat yukhoe, tripe, and various beef offal cuts, allowing diners to tailor the meal to their tastes.
Toward the end of the meal, complimentary seasonal fresh fruit and nostalgic snack crackers are brought to the table for an easygoing, hospitable finish. Alongside draft beer and other alcoholic drinks, soft beverages such as oolong tea and apple juice are also on hand.
Koraitei operates exclusively for dinner, and because the staff attend closely to grilling at every table, reservations ahead of time are essential. It remains a dependable spot for an evening spent gathering around the grill with companions to feast on hearty cuts wrapped in abundant greens.
